Artist's Quarter

In addition to the new immigrants, Israeli artists also came to Safed to open galleries and studios. Early artists, including Yitzhak Frenel and Moshe Castels, had lived and worked in the town since the early 1940s and by the 1950s many of Israel's best-known artists had opened galleries in Tzfat. These artists included Ziona Tagger, Aryeh Merzer, Mordechai Levanon, Yitzhak Amitai, Shimshon Hotzman, David Gilboa and Raviv. Many of these artists were penniless but they shared their resources as they joined together to create the Artists Quarter Association. Today there are new artists in Safed. Some of them have established their galleries in the Old Jewish Quarter, where tourists generally go to see the historical synagogues and other sites. Other new artists have come to the Artist Quarter to establish their galleries in the historical Artist Colony of Safed. Old Safed Cemetery

The Safed Old Jewish Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in Israel. The cemetery has been used for hundreds of years as a burial place, including important people and important Jewish religious leaders. The cemetery is located along the western slope of Safed on the slope of Mount Canaan near the Amud River.

Ari Ashkenazi Synagogue

The Ashkenazi Ari Synagogue, located in Safed, Israel, was built in memory of Rabbi Isaac Luria (1534 - 1572), who was known by the Hebrew acronym "the ARI". It dates from the late 16th-century, it being constructed several years after the death of Luria, a great kabbalist who arrived in Safed in 1570. The synagogue is known for its colorful and ornate Holy Ark. It may be the oldest synagogue in Israel that is still in use. Though the synagogue is associated by name with the Ashkenazi community, today it serves as a place of worship for Hasidic and Sephardic Jews and remains popular among worshippers of different affiliations.

Glass Blowing Demonstrations

Renowned glass blower and painter Sheva Chaya enlivens her beautiful and popular gallery in Tzfat’s Artist Quarter, where she shares her story, artistic process, and unique insights with thousands of visitors from around the world each year. After receiving her degree in Visual arts and Art History from Princeton University in 1997, Sheva Chaya made Aliyah to Tzfat, Israel, where the land, the people, and the rich tradition of spiritual teachings infused a greater depth to her work. Sheva Chaya works in the medium of borosilicate glass and watercolor paint. Her art touches the themes of the Land of Israel, Jewish women, Torah and Kaballah, great mystics, and inner light. She leads various workshops and retreats, and teaches both painting and glassblowing. Sheva Chaya regularly hosts lively glass blowing demonstrations in her studio, with a mystical twist unique to her and the city of Tzfat. Her glassblowing demos are well known and have made Tzfat Glass a destination for tourists and art enthusiasts.

Frikasse Zehava

Another choice spot in Tzfat for some amazing food is Frikasse Zehava. For the last twenty-three years, Zahava, owner and frikasse expert, has carried on her parents' tradition of making these golden Tunisian delicacies. Zehava’s Frikasse is undeniably kosher, meaning she received a kosher certification from Israel’s rabbinate making her kitchen kosher till the end of time. Her frikasse is served with shakshuka, couscous, spicy peppers, white potatoes, roasted eggplant, caramelized onions, and hard-boiled eggs.

Ronen HaTemani

Tucked away in the mystical city of Tzfat is a restaurant with no official title but plenty of visitors. Simply known as Ronen’s Place or sometimes Lahuhe Original, Ronen the Yemenite, chef and owner, is whipping up some classic Yemenite dishes with plenty of warmth and personality. Ronen has plenty of personality all his own and from the moment you interact with him it is clear he wants his patrons to have a good time. Maybe too good of a time, serving a lovely combination of wine and qat, a plant that gives one a distinct high or buzz. There is also plenty of singing and dancing to go along with the meal.

Hummus Osol

At the entrance to Rosh Pina, lies a small and colorful hummus restaurant- Hummus Osol. For more than 15 years their claim to fame has been their hummus, with delicious toppings and flavors available, such as ful and delicate masbacha. Some also say that the homestyle labaneh, a creamy, thick, yogurt cheese, is not to be missed!

David Amiel

David's background gives him a unique background and ability to give visitors a full tour. His family history gave him a particular interest in Tzfat's history, and his academic credentials include a M.A. in History and Philosophy, with his Master's thesis on "The Influences of Kabbalah on the Shabtai Tzvi Movement". (Shabtai Tzvi was a false messiah of the 17th century who misled a huge segment of the Jewish World, including many great Rabbis, of the day. When he was denounced, and subsequently converted to Islam, it was akin to a spiritual catastrophe for the Jews of the day, who had been misled by Tzvi, as well as their own leadership). Because Tzfat was such a huge center of the Jewish community of Israel throughout the 15th - 19th centuries, their descendents can today be found scattered throughout the world, and it is not uncommon for people from lands as far-flung as Australia, Brazil, South Africa, and everywhere in-between to arrive in Tzfat asking if "anyone knows where my great-great-great-grandmother Zissel Goldenfarb's house is" and "does anyone know if there are any descendents left in Tzfat?"
