GENERAL
The Art Nouveau Forbát or Müller House was built according to Lipót Baumhorn’s plans at the corner of Dugonics Sq. between 1911 and 1912. By this time, it was the eighth building (along with the New Synagogue, Headquarter building of the Jewish community, Ciduk Hadin House in the Jewish cemetery, 3 Wagner palaces and the building of the Csongrád Savings Bank) designed by Jewish architect Baumhorn in the city of Szeged. Most probably, he gained popularity after the construction works of the New Synagogue finished in 1903. Lipót Baumhorn was contracted by Dr. Leó Forbát to build a multi-storey building at the corner of Dugonics Sq. The three-storey buiding, facing three streets, was constructed within a single year, having private apartments upstairs and shops downstairs. The famous Baross Restaurant of the Haggenmacher Beer Factory operated here for 7 years since 1912. Contemporary reports described its terrace as “the nicest summer place to be”. Customer experience was elevated by various live musical performances (military band, gipsy band) and first-class Hungarian and French meals. The restaurant was replaced by a furniture hall in 1919; ever since the downstairs are has been occupied by different kind of shops.
