GENERAL
The house of Alfred Kästenbaum, PhD, an attorney-at-law, Korsky since 1913, is the only example of a civic house built in the style of the Hungarian Secession in Osijek. This phenomenon was due to the fact that the owner entrusted designing of the house to his wife's brother, Budapest architect Ferenc Fischer. The one-storey, two-wing family house has an irregular floor plan. In front of the building there is a 5-meter-wide front garden. The front garden is enclosed by a wrought iron decorative fence on a low parapet. The facade with avant-corps (risalit) and balcony is detailed with Secession ornaments and blue tiles. The architectural decorative concept finds the inspiration in the specific national heritage, the Hungarian folk architecture and applied arts. Inside the house a rich decoration of wooden staircases, embedded mirrors, stucco on walls and ceilings has been preserved. The three central rooms of the first floor, the dining room, the salon and the Herrenzimmer, have differently shaped ceiling stucco decorations. A thorough refurbishment of the facade and the roof was carried out in 2016. Now it serves as the Institute for Oftalmology of Osijek Clinical Hospital Center.
