GENERAL
The author of one of the most representative Osijek Secession houses, the house of Osijek attorney-at-law, City Council representative and agile activist of cultural institutions and Jewish community, Hugo Spitzer, PhD, remained unknown. When it was built in 1905, it had a residential function with a representative lawyer's office on the ground floor. The facade is decorated with numerous constructions of eaves, pillars and wrought-iron window fences, as well as the elegant front-garden fence in a shape of a mushroom. The one-storey, two-wing family house, embedded within the neighbouring houses, with a front garden and two large flats was built in 1905. Its construction was ordered by Osijek lawyer Hugo Spitzer, PhD. The front garden is enclosed by a wrought iron fence, located on a low parapet, between sculptured masonry columns. The front facade is completely preserved with a loggia, a glazed canopy and an attic above the rounded avant-corps (risalit). Built in the setting of the Hungarian traditional architecture full of metaphors, Spitzer House is a rare example of representative residential architecture. A thorough refurbishment of the facade and the roof was carried out in 2016. Now it iserves as the Institute for Oftalmology of Osijek Clinical Hospital Center.
